I remember watching this episode on The Tyra Banks Show a few years ago and our dicussion in class on race reminded of it, so I thought I would share it. If you skip to 3:35, a man named "Vincente" distinguishes himself as "brown" and claims he "doesn't like black people." The whole audience is appalled when he states this comment, since to most people he himself would be labeled as black. It really seems that we live in a black/white world. Most people don't see people who are Italian or Irish as Italin or Irish, we just define them as "Caucasion". The same goes for African Americans and even mulattos, we just define them as "black." I think it is interesting that this man seems to think of himself as superior to black men of darker skin color, since he isn't as dark in appearance as them.
Really good video to relate to class!
ReplyDeleteI adored this episode<3 At the same time, these participants were told to base on looks, therefore, as long as they get to know the indivdual(s), it's fine.
