Sojourner Truth
Isabella Bomefree was born into slavery in Hurley New York and renamed herself in 1843 later in her life when she claimed to have had a visionary experience. The amazing part of Sojourner Truth was how passionate and compelling she was to listen too. Since Sojourner was illiterate her speeches and words of wisdom were recorded by another but she claimed "Even though i cant read, I can read people".
I find it amazing how powerful one woman can be. In 1863 Truth chased down a bus in Montgomery, Alabama and called out "I WANT TO RIDE" the bus driver replied that only whites were allowed to ride, which resulted in him loosing his job. I liked how at the end of the passage it stated that Truth believes that "none of us are free, until all of us are free". She seems to have been very well grounded accepting all races and not depending on anyone but herself. "Nobody ever helps me into carriages or over mud puddles, Aint I a woman?"
Aint I a Woman?
"I have plowed and planted and gathered into barns...I could work as much and eat as much as a man....I have born 13 children and seem most of them sold off to slaver and when I cried out with my mothers grief, none but Jesus heard me, Aint I a woman?"
-Sadly a lot of this sexism still happens today, plowing and getting dirty is still concidered mans work while bearing children is considered womans work
-Truth brings up such a good debate, since she can eat, work and plow like a man how come she is still treated like a weak woman?
-I also like that she points out that woman have to go through a lot as well, bearing 13 children would not be an easy task!
"Women cant have as much rights as men, cause Christ wasn't a woman"
-Truth rebuttals that; "where did your Christ come from? From god and a woman"
-Men can not be responsible for every accomplishment in this world
