blog post #5
I really wanted to talk about Sojourner truth in my last blog post because she seemed like on of the first women writer's that we have read this semester that really attacked the Christ image as demeaning to women head on. For so long women have been plagued with the idea that we are the bearer of original sin and therefore anything that we do would have to be sub-p[ar or even blasphemous compared to what male can and does do. However, this interpretation of the Genesis story was completely discovered by man and therefore completely interpreted by man. Just as with other books and writings, the interpretation and reading is going to be different for everyone because we all have difference experiences to back up how we take it all in. We need to add a women's interpretation to that story. Sojourner Truth opened the door for that to happen by recognizing that Jesus Christ was birthed by a woman and that no men were involved. That idea must live on. Sojourner Truth asked her audience of women (I'm assuming) to hop onto the band wagon of the slave abolishment and continue this rights movement over into the women's rights arena. That door is not yet closed. I believe that her speech rings true today. I believe that we still have a lot of opportunity to open up discussion about the many writings (specifically within the Bible) that can have more than one reading and that some readings can or have been harmful to women.
