Adrienne Rich

Adrienne Rich was a contemporary poet who was educated at home until 4th grade. She found it hard later in her life to combine writing and raising children in her environment. I found it interesting that she choose to accept only certain awards that were given to her and denied some, i feel like not a lot of people would do that. A quote i really like was on page 1095 "Love of life is never ending"

My favorite of her pieces was "From Inscriptions"
  • I really enjoyed how she started off the piece saying how when you first meet someone you go from barely knowing someone to being able to actually know them
  • " When a voice learns to sing it can be heard as dangerous, when a voice learns to listen it can be heard as desperate. The self unlocked to many selves" - I believe this quote is talking about misinterpretations and can be related to teenagers when your first finding your voice and who you really are and are afraid what everyone else is thinking of you
  • Also on page 1111 she states at "19 the mermaid can sink or swim" This is when a women is typically trying to either get an education or figure out what she wants to do with her life, which can either go very well or not so well
  • On page 1111 Adrienne discuses "sleeping without sex" at around the age of 19, people always assume that people are doing more than simply sleeping together when really some people just want to enjoy the pleasure of sleeping next to the person you care about
I also really enjoyed how Adrienne and her friend addressed letters to each other on page  1096

The Universe

I found that really clever and representative at how small we really are compared to the Universe as a whole
