Link: The Daily Show

I watched this clip of the Daily Show a few weeks ago in one of my journalism classes and I was just completely offended, as I'm sure all of you are. Jon Stewart does a fabulously humorous job of making fun of the claim that "married women tended to vote for Romney" simply because of their views and worries of their children, their family life, and their negativity towards abortion. Now, I'm sure EVERY SINGLE married woman has the mind capacity to only think about the outcome of her children and her husband, right?

What was expressed through this clip is that even in today's society, women are being stereotyped and categorized with their beliefs simply based on the fact if they are married or single. The traditional stereotypes of single women being "slutty" and demanding free birth control and legal abortions would of course, only vote for Obama right? And married women who only worry about their children (because of course they HAVE to have children since they are married) are more conservative, therefore voting for Romney. Personally, I think this way of thinking and perceiving women's votes is twisted and untrue, which Stewart not so subtly expressed in this segment.

I found this video to relate back to our discussions in class about penis envy and Anne Sexton's piece "In Celebration of My Uterus." I feel that especially now that us women have the right to vote and can get our voice out there in comparison to women a hundred years ago, it is vital for women to be proud of their lady parts and speak out against societal norms and gender roles.  We shouldn't let our vaginas hold us back in society by succumbing to social stereotypes and gender inequality.  Something as ridiculous as the accusations by FOX of single vs. married women voters targets a traditional stereotype that has been long in the making, and it is sad to see it still exists today. Like Anne Sexton conveys, women should celebrate the fact that they have a uterus and have their own thoughts and beliefs different from what society may assign.
