Blog Post #5

While reading the LAWL introduction to Section V: Resistance and Transformation, I found that one of my favorite quotes was by Adrienne Rich, on page 1089. "A movement for change lives in feelings, actions, and words," she declares in "Notes toward a Politics of Location." We talked about this specific quote in class a bit, but it got me thinking. Great change is brought about when enough people believe in the same thing, when enough people feel strongly about making that change possible. Dr. McGee brought up "personal vs. political." In my Psychology of Women class last year, we talked a lot about that. With practically every personal choice a woman makes, politics is, in some way, involved. For example, the government makes a law saying birth control isn't allowed to be given out for free in schools, but people still have sex. So when a girl gets pregnant, she wants to get an abortion. But nope, the government has banned those in her state. So now she is forced to raise a child she didn't want from the start, and asks for government assistance. She can't get that either, because of some reason or another. This is just one situation that many women in the United States happen to share. The reason that change is so amazing is because it comes from a place inside people that need it. I think the quote by Rich shows that.

I am the Vice-Treasurer for Pride Alliance, one of the SA groups on campus. For our closing ceremonies this year, we flew in Mary Gonzalez, a candidate for state representative of Texas. She is also now the first openly pansexual woman in office, after winning the election. Among other things, she spoke about why she chose to get into politics to begin with and much of her speech had to do with her passion to gain rights as a woman, as well as a woman that is part of the LGBTQIA community.
