The intro to Section 3,
Rethinking the Maternal, addresses the maternal role that some women have, or don't have. Along with this idea comes questions such as, can a mother work? Does being a mother give you power or render you powerless? These questions really interested me because I have always looked at my mother as an extremely intelligent and "powerful" woman, and she stayed home with us kids until we all went to school. After we started school, my mom went back to work. However, it wasn't like she came home from work and just sat around. After work, it was time to be a mom again. In addition, now that you are working, you have to also catch up on chores around the house as well as feed your family dinner, do laundry, help kids with homework, and more. Now I think that it is interesting that in our society, men are not expected to have to endure this stress of extra "work" when you get home from work. Within the intro, Writing as a Mother, it discusses the difficulties of being a working mom, specifically an author, who would "dare not, say: that they find a tension between their mothering and their art that is sometimes unbearable." Therefore, all of this information made me wonder how much money a stay at home mom would actually make if she got paid. In addition with that thought, keep in mind that some moms also work so the salary that is generated for a stay at home mom would be a little different due to the amount of time the working mom would actually be spending on the stay at home mom duties.
