Pink!

Pink!
Bio:
Alecia “Pink” More was born in
Doylestown, Pennsylvania on September 8, 1979 and raised in Philadelphia. She
wanted to become a singer from a young age and had many strong female music
inspirations including Madonna, Mary J. Blige, 4 Non Blondes, Janis Joplin, and
Whitney Houston. As a teenager, she was very unique, went through many phases,
and was a tomboy. She spent many years singing in clubs and participating in
talent shows. When she was 13 years old, a local DJ asked her to be a back-up
singer for his rap group, Schools of Thought. Shortly after, an executive discovered
her and she joined a female R&B group. She signed with Laface Records and
started her solo career when things with the rap group didn’t work out. She
released her debut, “Can’t Take Me Home,” which went Platinum, in the spring of
2000, and has written and co-written many songs. She dropped out of high school
and got her GED. She married Carey Hart on January 26, 2006 and gave birth to
daughter Willow on June 2, 2011. She has been very successful.
Quotes:
“I appreciate being a girl more now than
ever. There's a struggle involved in it, but it's so rewarding when you prove
to all men that you might have something up on 'em.”
“I decided at 15 that I didn't want to be
one of those artists that gets up and sings love songs they don't mean. I
decided that I was going to be me to the fullest extent, that my songs were
going to reflect relationships I've had, things I've been through, and even the
stuff I'm embarrassed about.”
“I have to speak for myself. As far as videos
go--casting, the artwork, everything--I'm completely hands-on. You have to be
if you want your points across.”
Fun Facts:
She claims that her name comes from the movie Reservoir Dogs (1992). While
seeing the movie with friends, they all agreed that she resembled the character
Mr. Pink, played by Steve Buscemi.
They thought the name to be a great irony, as she was a tomboy.
She was voted one of Choice USA's "Top 30 Under
30" activists for reproductive freedom in 2004.
Parodied Paris Hilton,
Lindsay Lohan, Mary-Kate Olsen, Jessica Simpson, Hilary Duff, Nicole Richie and several
other Hollywood celebrities on the music video for her single "Stupid
Girls", in which she deplored the lack of good role models for girls
(February 2006).
About “Perfect”
I chose the song “Perfect.” It was Pink’s
11th Top 10 hit single. It was 2nd on the Billboard Top
100. The music video is very controversial. One of Pink’s main messages was
that even in the bad times, everyone is perfect. Despite our flaws, we are
still “around.” The video deals with issues such as cutting, depression,
Anorexia, and self-mutilation. She wants listeners to look past their
imperfections and see themselves as perfect. This song was inspired by her husband.
She also wrote it as a message for her child, who she was one month pregnant
with at the time.
Thoughts on the Song
I really love the message of the song. The lyrics
are something that every girl needs to hear, especially the lyrics. “. People
are so quick to get down on themselves. Girls need to realize that they are perfect
just the way that they are. I think it does a really good job at encompassing
many of the issues that teens deal with today. It showed how young negative
feelings towards oneself can start. It also deals with the whole conflict
between being yourself or being popular and accepted. Along with this, it shows
that teens can struggle with depression, Anorexia, cutting, and self-mutilation
as a way of dealing with societal pressures. Teens struggle with fitting in. Along
with this, it shows that once you really accept yourself for who you are and be
yourself, then you will find happiness. I also thought it was interesting that
in the classroom scene, the girl turned her F into Medusa’s face.

Lyrics
Made a wrong turn, once or twice
Dug my way out, blood and fire
Bad decisions, that's alright
Welcome to my silly life
Mistreated, misplaced, misunderstood
Miss, no way it's all good, it didn't slow me down
Mistaken, always second guessing
Underestimated, look, I'm still around
Pretty, pretty please, don't you ever, ever feel
Like you're less than, less than perfect
Pretty, pretty please, if you ever, ever feel
Like you're nothing you are perfect to me
You're so mean when you talk
About yourself, you are wrong
Change the voices in your head
Make them like you instead
So complicated, look how big you'll make i
Filled with so much hatred, such a tired game
It's enough, I've done all I can think of
Chased down all my demons, see you do the same
Pretty, pretty please, don't you ever, ever feel
Like you're less than, less than perfect
Pretty, pretty please, if you ever, ever feel
Like you're nothing, you are perfect to me
The whole world stares while I swallow the fear
The only thing I should be drinking is an ice cold beer
So cool in lying and we tried, tried, tried
But we try too hard, it's a waste of my time
Done looking for the critics 'cause they're everywhere
They don't like my genes, they don't get my hair
Strange ourselves and we do it all the time
Why do we do that? Why do I do that? Why do I do that?
Ooh, pretty, pretty, pretty
Pretty, pretty please, don't you ever, ever feel
Like you're less than, less than perfect
Pretty, pretty please, if you ever, ever feel
Like you're nothing, you are perfect to me
You are perfect to me
You're perfect, you're perfect to me
Pretty, pretty please if you ever, ever feel
Like you're less than, less than perfect
Pretty, pretty please if you ever, ever feel
Like you're nothing, you are perfect to me
