After reading Gloria Anzaldua’s Speaking in Tongues, I found a noticeable connection to Virginia
Woolf’s A Room of One’s Own. Virginia
made her point of saying how women would go crazy because they were not allowed
to write, and in order for women to write they needed to have their own room
with a lock on it. Anzaldua goes against that thought, and elaborates on how a
woman does not need a room to write, or even time to write. She expresses how
women should and could write anywhere- in between meals, on the bus, anywhere
they have a few minutes to spare. She states that women should listen to their
inner voice while preforming their household tasks, and then as soon as the opportune
moment comes along, jot it down somewhere! Anywhere! Gloria also explains how
fear is one of the leading factors of why women do not write which ties into
Woolf’s speech when she talks about how women would keep diaries. Getting over
the fear of seeing writing, seeing your inner thoughts on paper, will be the
first grand step towards overcoming the huge ordeal of women not being able to
write. If all women can just forget their fear and get their thoughts out
there, women could start a huge revelation.
I thoroughly enjoyed this piece. Gloria really expressed her idea of how you should be brave and not allow your fear to get the best of you. One should not fear the pen, instead one should understand the freedom that comes along with it and put it to good use.
