CWW: Thea Monyee
My CWW today was chosen because her piece was 100% authentic and every woman in the class could relate. Not everyone has been cheated on; maybe you know someone who has been cheated on, is being cheating on or even played the role of the "other woman" yourself. My goal at the end of the semester is to truly understand, What's the big deal about Women Writers?; and why is this a class? From our class discussion thus far I am beginning to wrap my head around the concept. Women fight the stereotypical role of just doing what they are told and following through in that way. Women are the homemakers and have no voice but writing IS that voice. Virgina Wolff's essay and lecture, A Room of One's Own, was addressed to many aspiring woman writers who are in search of that guidance that sense of feeling like its not wrong to step out and do something more than being the perfect wife and mother. Thea Monyee my CWW reminded me of Wolff; no matter how sarcastic the delivery was, the point and purpose never changed. Wolff made me personally feel strong about being a writer and continuing on as an English Major because although I love to write I get discouraged about where that will take me in life. Monyee gave hope and strength to a whole slew of women who feel weak and helpless when they find out about infidelity. Monyee pushes off the situation and makes her stance known. Wolff does the same thing. Both these women relate in that they showed me no matter what the situation, be strong because you are a women. Confidence and Certainty will go a long way.

Tyra, I loved this selection! I think that some people in class were surprised with the language Thea used in her poem, but I actually appreciated it a lot! Women's writing isn't always saying something without pushing the envelope, sometimes certain boundaries have to be crossed in order to make a point. This goes back to the double standard between men and women. If a man swears, and/or makes a nasty comment about something, it's accepted more because they're male. I hope more people bring pieces like this to class :)
ReplyDeleteAw yes thanks! I loved it just as much. It is an extremely inspiring piece but not in a conventional way. You can definitely check out more spoken word poems on YouTube by Monyee or other Def Poetry artists. I am sure you will find more that you enjoy!
