Talking Back

"I was taught that it was important to speak but to talk a talk that was in itself a silence." (Page 74)   I interpreted this to mean that bell hooks would speak but she would pay attention to every word she said.  This way, in case her words weren't accepted, it's almost like she never said anything at all but if it was accepted then maybe, hopefully she would be praised and actually feel okay about speaking.  For example, she continued to explain that it was okay to speak at church on Sundays, but if her time could be useful for something else then it would be looked down upon.
