A Room Of One's Own - BLOG ONE

As I was reading A Room Of One's Own it made me think about the fact that maybe Virginia Woolf could have imagined that one day we would be in the year 2012 and women would be so free to write.  It almost seems as though she's writing to us personally from her words said so long ago to inspire us and make us feel lucky to have come so far from where she had to be.
I especially loved chapter 5, page 55 where Virginia Woolf says "For books continue each other, in spite of our habit of judging them separately." It's almost as if she's including everyone who had ever written before her, everyone writing with her at that time and everyone in the future who will read what she's written and write with influence of her work.  It's awesome how she can see so far beyond her own writing and seemingly beyond her own time as well.
I also think it's interesting that her quote pertains to life in general and how the things people do truly influence those around them.  I think we are all a reflection of everyone we know and every experience we have ever had.  This influence on us as people is similar to the influence she's describing books to have, an influence from every other writer.

Here is a link to a video of a slide show of photos of Virginia Woolf and a recording of her speaking.  I thought it was awesome to connect a face and voice to the text.

  1. " I think we are all a reflection of everyone we know and every experience we have ever had" I really like that sentence and agree with it. The people in our lives really do influence us along with our experiences. I like that you pointed out how she includes others in her writing, i feel like a lot of writers don't think to do that.
