Identity and Difference

I have a feeling I am going to enjoy this section of the text. One thing I liked when I read the introduction to the section was on page 899. It said, "As Lorde suggests, much of Western history has urged humans to view difference in dichotomous terms: dominant/subordinate, good/bad, superior/inferior. Instead of acquiescing to this hierarchial indoctrination, she argues, women must learn to relate as equals across differences..." I love this and I think it relates to all parts of life, not just women. So many times people focus on difference as bad. If you are different from the mainstream culture, it is looked at as weird or bad. Why does it have to be? The world would be happier and more peaceful if everyone accepted one another for their differences and used these differences to work together. I like how the introduction also pointed out that identity and difference can cause oppression; not just by men. I think this is such a strong point. Even to this day, women will rip each other apart for being different from one another. It is a constant struggle to find a way for women to work together as a group, but still identify as your own unique person. I look forward to the pieces in this section. I feel as though they will be very interesting and insightful.
