Blog Post #3!

Barbara Kingsolver's "Letter to a Daughter at Thirteen"

I must admit that I absolutely LOVED this piece. It was an interesting and easy read. I didn't have to plow through extensive vocabulary or try and understand the hidden meanings behind similes, metaphors and form of poems. It was simple.

I think one of the main reasons I enjoyed this piece is because it's relateable. A lot of the pieces that we have been reading seem so far fetched and theoretical. When I read this, I found myself giggling at things that I know I have done and said. I find myself thinking about how my mom reacted and how I thought I would handle it once I become a mother. She talks about a boy picking on her daughter in fifth grade; how he would make sexual innuendos toward her and purposely embarrass her. Actually, this sort of thing happened to me, and my mom handled it very similarly to how Kingsolver did. I love when our readings are relateable, because then they become more memorable and have a lasting effect on me.

Another point I wanted to raise was about the importance of sharing experiences with your children. I believe one of the most important things a mother, or either parent in general, could do is help teach their children by sharing how they went about situations. I know when I'm older and have my own children that hearing how my mom dealt with me, my twin sister, and my older sister is going to help tremendously. Even though I wont be able to do exactly what she did, at least I'll have the support and knowledge gained from hers.

Just thought I'd share about a book I heard about. It's called Letter to My Daughter by Maya Angelou. I haven't read it fully but I have read excerpts from it and from what I read it's definitely worth taking a look! Enjoy!
